Hillsborough sergeant arrested after argument over parking spot

A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was arrested on a charge of obstruction without violence after an argument over a parking spot in Manatee County on Sunday, according to authorities.

Sgt. Brendan Fitzgerald, 52, was part of a large group of people involved in a fight over two handicapped-accessible parking spots at a private condo complex, 1501 Gulf Drive N in Bradenton Beach, according to a Bradenton Beach Police Department probable cause affidavit. Fitzgerald told police another man “struck/pushed” him during the argument, and he wanted to press charges. The man told police Fitzgerald had “struck/pushed” him first, and he planned to press charges, too.

More than a dozen people who either participated in the argument or witnessed it gave statements to police — the only person who refused to cooperate was Fitzgerald, according to authorities.

He refused to identify himself and quickly alternated between being calm and aggressive and “kept stating he was a Hillsborough sheriffs sergeant and I should take note,” the affidavit said.

“I’m a sergeant, I know the law kid, I’m not identifying,” Fitzgerald told police, according to the affidavit.

When told he was going to be arrested for knowingly and willfully obstructing an investigation, the affidavit says Fitzgerald responded by saying “This is a joke, your a joke, you can’t take me for obstruction. Learn your laws, boy!”

Fitzgerald was arrested and given a $120 bond.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said as a result of his arrest Fitzgerald has been placed on administrative leave.

Skills training program in Bradenton graduates 78 students | Business Observer

A skills training and summer internship program saw the graduation of 78 middle and high school students.

The four-part program, a partnership between the State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota’s 26 West Center and CareerSource Suncoast, began on May 30. The students came from 28 schools across the Bradenton and Sarasota area.

“Nothing is more important than developing our future workforce here in the Bradenton-Sarasota area,” says Todd Fritch, SCF executive vice president and provost, in a statement. “This unique experiential learning program gives our local middle and high school students a head start on their careers and helps local companies and organizations identify and grow future talent.”

As part of the program, there was an interactive one-day workshop, a career fair with 18 local employers, six-week internships and weekly online assignments that received feedback from instructors. CareerSource Suncoast CEO Joshua Matlock says the partnership complements the organization’s summer youth employment program.

“We can offer youth that may not otherwise have access to these skills and experiences an opportunity to learn job skills in the classroom and the workplace,” he says in the release.

The 26 West Center, named for its address at 5840 26th St. W. in Bradenton, is a 40,000-square-foot space designed for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The $4.4 million project hosts seven business services, including a business growth lab, student incubator, entrepreneurship academy, personal branding lab, digital collective, coding academy and creative suite.
