Oscura Brunch Series: Andy Brey - The Bradenton Times

Oscura Brunch Series: Andy Brey – The Bradenton Times

Andy Brey is an emerging acoustic-folk-pop crooner whose original music is primed with compelling lyrics and a surprisingly 21st century southern gothic schizoid vibe.

His musical roots sink deep into the hills of New England while his unique vocal style is infused with the bright rays of Florida sunshine. As an adept six-string flatpicker and mandolinist, his live shows are not just any ordinary candy-colored folksy kitsch.

Based out of Tampa, he has performed for years as an auxiliary sideman with several of the areas best known Americana-Roots acts. No cover; tips appreciated.

Performances at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

House members want to increase salaries for FL governor, Cabinet officers and judges in 2027-28 - The Bradenton Times

House members want to increase salaries for FL governor, Cabinet officers and judges in 2027-28 – The Bradenton Times

by Mitch Perry, Florida Phoenix

Gov. Ron DeSantis currently makes $141,400 in his full-time job as Florida governor, which right now is lower than at least ten other governors around the country, but under a proposal (PCB APC 24-04) moving in the Florida Legislature the salaries of the governor, cabinet officers and judges would all increase in the coming years.

The bill says that beginning in the 2027-2028 fiscal year (when DeSantis would no longer be serving as governor due to term limits), the salary of the governor would increase to “at least 100%” of what a member of the Florida Supreme Court makes, which currently is $251,414.

The proposal also says that the salaries of the lieutenant governor and the state Cabinet offices — attorney general, chief financial officer, and agricultural commissioner — would also rise to at least 95 percent of the annual salary established for the governor. Currently, the lieutenant governor’s salary is $135, 515, and the Cabinet officers are $139,988.

The bill also calls for raising the annual salaries of judges in Florida to a certain percentage of what Florida Supreme Court justices make. District courts of appeal judges (who currently make $212,562) would go to at least 90 percent of a Supreme Court justice; Circuit court judges (who now make $191,163) would make up to 80 percent of the annual salary for a Supreme Court justice, and the annual salary of a county judge (who make $180,616) would be at least 75 percent of the annual salary of a Supreme Court justice.

The salaries of all Florida lawmakers and judges come from the Florida Office of Economic and Demographic and Research’s report from last September.

There would be no direct pay increase for state lawmakers who currently make $29,697.

The proposal says that legislators would receive a monthly allowance for intradistrict expenses in an amount set annually by the Speaker of the House and Senate President.

House Democratic Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell asked why the salary bump for the governor was needed, and House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Leek replied that the Florida governor’s salary is the lowest among the ten biggest states in the nation.

The salaries for the governors of California, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee all make more than $200,000, according to Ballotpedia. And the governors of states like Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Vermont and Ohio also make more that the governor of Florida does.

Pace Center for Girls in Bradenton helps transform lives with supportive learning

Pace Center for Girls in Bradenton helps transform lives with supportive learning

BRADENTON, Fla. — Hallways and classrooms at the Pace Center for Girls in Bradenton look pretty much like any other school; except for it’s just girls here, and the positive messaging that adorns almost every wall.

“We say here at Pace that every day we are changing girls’ lives, and we believe when we are changing a girl’s life, we are changing the fabric of the community,” explains Amy Wick Mavis, the executive director of Pace Manatee.

Sixty-four middle and high schoolers attend Pace for a variety of reasons. Most have suffered some kind of trauma; maybe their home life isn’t the best, or maybe they’ve been bullied. And because of that, they’ve fallen behind in school.

“I’m doing a lot better here than at my regular school,” 13-year-old Grace Faasse said. The teen says throughout her school career, she felt unseen by teachers and picked on by classmates.

“I used to be super chubby,” Faasse. said “So they would make fun of my weight, my glasses, my teeth…just a whole bunch of different things,” she said, acknowledging that kids can be mean.

At Pace Manatee teachers are supportive, and the small class sizes ensure that students get attention. They can’t just slip through the cracks.

Students also go to school year-round, but Pace is more than academics. Mental health counselors have time to help with problems encountered at both school and at home.

“Pace is different in that each student is assigned a master’s level counselor, that’s working with them on their social and emotional needs,” explains program director Jessica Hamilton. “That includes coping strategies, self-esteem building, conflict resolution, communication — as well as life skills.”

These are exciting times for the Manatee Pace program. Right now, Pace is operating in a temporary space and construction will soon start at 3508 26th St. W. in Bradenton on a new much larger center.

“We will be able to improve our services, add more services to girls and provide outreach services as well. So, this is really something quite extraordinary,” says Wick Mavis, gazing at a rendering of the proposed building.

Since 1989, more than 2,000 Pace girls have gone on to become successful and proud Pace women.

“Really, our Pace girls are all over the community and they’re our best representative of why Pace is so important,” Wick Mavis said.

And Grace, well, she’s on her way, too. Someday she aims to wear a police badge.

Faasse says there’s a long line of police officers in her family and then there’s this: “I think with everything that I’ve personally gone through, I think I might be able to help kids like me.”

10 Tampa Bay and the TEGNA Foundation are pleased to support Pace Manatee with a $2,000 grant.

Delayed and in demand, nationwide ambulance shortage impacts communities across the Tampa Bay area

Delayed and in demand, nationwide ambulance shortage impacts communities across the Tampa Bay area

Manatee County says they have 21 ambulances on order. Some orders date back years.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The sirens don’t stop along the streets in Bradenton.

“The growth is continuing there,” said Clinton Faulkner, president of the Manatee County EMS union.

More growth means more need. The county has focused efforts over the past couple of years on filling paramedic openings, but now another problem has sounded the alarm.

“While we’ve been approved for new positions, new stations, things like that, the simple fact is we just don’t have ambulances to put people in. We have the people, we just don’t have the physical ambulances,” Faulkner said.

He says the county has 21 ambulances on order. Some of the orders date back to 2021.

“Right now, the manufacturing timeline is about 30 months for an ambulance,” said James Crutchfield, Deputy Director of Public Safety for Manatee County. ”So we’re buying ambulances 3-4-5 years into the future.”

And it’s not just them. 10 investigates uncovering this is a nationwide issue, an ambulance shortage is impacting first responders across the country.

“It’s taking up to two years or more right now to get this vehicle. Prior to the pandemic, once you got the order in it would be three months to 120 days,” said Mark Postma, administrator for the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services-Ground Vehicle Standards.

He says the organization has been closely monitoring this situation at a national level.

“The industry has been aware of since the end of the pandemic,” Postma said.

He says it’s all because of a labor shortage at the manufacturers.

“These vehicles normally have a life of about five years, and we have to extend that life on these vehicles and that will cause more maintenance, and in some cases, breakdowns could possibly occur,” Postma said.

That he says is the biggest complaint he’s hearing about from communities nationwide.

Even in Bradenton, ambulances need repair, but the community is still in need of help.

“We’ve had to kind of work out agreements with other areas where if we need a spare ambulance. We can actually rent an ambulance if we run out of physical ambulances to keep our current fleet up,” Faulkner said.

The county commission is aware of the backlog and has already approved ambulance orders that they’ll need for the future so they can get their orders on the list, which is what the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services is encouraging all communities to do.

They say if you know you’re going to need new ambulances in a year or two, don’t wait, get on the list now.

Bishop continues Snooty's legacy, rehabilitating 2 manatees

Bishop continues Snooty’s legacy, rehabilitating 2 manatees

Two young manatees are staying at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in a 60,000-gallon habitat that resembles a spring.

BRADENTON, Fla. — We couldn’t tell you about Bradenton and Manatee County without talking about the world’s oldest-known manatee, Snooty. He lived to be 69.

He was the county’s official mascot and lived in the Manatee Rehabilitation Program at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature for most of his life.

The director of animal care says that’s not usually the case. Manatees will stay at the Bishop for a year or two in a 60,000-gallon habitat that resembles a spring.

“I think the exciting thing when people come here though is they don’t know we — they don’t know we do rehab. They don’t know these animals get to go back to the wild,” Virginia Edmonds said.

Right now, there are two rescued orphans at the Bishop, Ripkin and Tober. Ripkin was found in Ruskin probably at about 7 months old. He had seven broken ribs and still has the scars from a boat injury. But as these guys are getting back to optimal health, they are packing on weight, eating 200 pounds of food a day.

“People always ask how somebody can survive on just plants and grow big on just plants, but I always say think about rhinos and tapirs and elephants, really large animals that only eat plants, but they have a digestive system that helps them get all that nutrient out of there to grow big,” Edmonds said.

They’ve rehabilitated 45 manatees at the Bishop over the years.

Bradenton leaders work to create new vision for city

Bradenton leaders work to create new vision for city

Architects have created renderings for a new police department building and a new city hall.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The city of Bradenton is changing as leaders work on development agreements for downtown.

There’s already a plan for a new police department building. The same architect who designed the new St. Pete Police headquarters, AECOM, created a rendering of the vision for the property. Crews are expected to start on the 46,000-square-foot design in June.

It will cost $30 million.

Meanwhile, another architect, Sweet Sparkman Architecture, designed a new city hall which is also expected to start this summer once the location is finalized. That $18-million project will redevelop an existing building. Mayor Gene Brown says by selling the current city hall for redevelopment, the city expects it will become a $400 million to $500 million project that will bring in tax money that will help other areas of the city, too.

“My goal is to leave it better than when I came in, but set it up for 50 years, you know, where it’s something where they won’t be having to think about for a long time,” Brown said.

Both of these buildings will be set up higher for protection from storms. Brown says they also heard people want more green space, and they’re going to have that with more places for markets, events or even reading a book.

“You see that a lot in Tampa, when you’re up there around some of their buildings and the trees, and that that was up there not too long ago. And I just love seeing one of the streets where they had a bunch of benches out right in their downtown,” Brown said. “It’s an opportunity to set it up for generations to come. Now they’re coming here.”
